Principally Speaking...
Greetings students, parents, and friends of Middletown High School. Our parents and
community work diligently to support our student scholars in academics, sports, clubs, and
organizations. This support is instrumental in the mental, physical, and emotional development
of our student scholars.
I had the privilege of attending the Middletown Unified Ag Boosters and the Middletown Sports
Boosters meetings last week. The tremendous work these organizations and their volunteers do
to facilitate positive student outcomes is innumerable. I would personally like to thank all of
these stakeholders for the work they do! Thank you for your support.

Have a wonderful week!

Principal

Happenings
Our MHS ASB/ Leadership hosted a Club Rush event on Friday during lunch. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to check out groups that meet on campus. From Class clubs to Book Club to ESports and more! If your student is looking to get involved and hasn't signed up to join a club, don't be hesitant to ask what we have to offer.

Field trips are underway. This week the Ag department had the chance to take a handful of students to the Redwood Resource Rally in Scotia, Ca. These students were able to see first hand the types of careers that are involved in the logging industry. It even provided them the opportunity to be hands on at some stations as well as speak with individuals about their experiences and jobs.

Counselor's Corner

I had the pleasure of attending the University of California Counselor’s Conference this week and learned some very valuable information that I would like to pass on and clarify some information. This is valuable information for ALL students, not just Seniors:

GPA:
When a student applies with the University of California the GPA the college is looking at is from Summer after 9th grade to Summer after 11th grade. For each A-G approved Honors course, AP course, and College Course, the student will receive a 1 point GPA bump from UC, up to 8 points during the above mentioned term. All of our new Honors courses are A-G approved and if one is interested one can peruse our A-G approved courses by using this LINK (We have received approval on 24 courses in just the last year)

As stated in an earlier message, the UC application is now open. Although it cannot be submitted until October 1st, this is a great opportunity to be prepared and look at the application, start filling it out, and gather the items one may need to apply.
Here is the UC Application LINK.

I am also providing the links to each UC campus as they all have something to offer and they also have different specialties. On the individual campus websites, the college announces their tour dates which are coming up quickly, so please utilize these links!

Each University of California has guaranteed housing for Freshman as long as they apply for housing before the deadline.
More on the UC Application:

When UC is reading and evaluating an application (I would presume this is true for any college), they are looking for Activities and Awards and Personal Insight. Do not sell yourself short! Include every award you have received. Be sure to answer the questions fully and with thought. In the additional comments section be sure and let the evaluators know if you were unable to take a course or if a course was not offered, due to budget cuts that are out of a student’s control. They take all of this into consideration and want to hear from you!
We had 2 students receive substantial funding from UC last year. One actually received a full ride from UC San Diego! A student only limits themselves if they do not apply! One can always decide not to attend but there is only one chance to apply this year!

UC also offers a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program, which guarantees admission in two years to one of six UC campuses. Here's the LINK with more information.

FYI - Monday, September 23rd, UC San Diego will be here to present in Mr. Hoage’s room from 8 am-8:30am. This is an incredible opportunity for students to ask questions and understand what UC San Diego has to offer. If you want to attend, please come see me as soon as possible.

CSU (California State Universities)

I will be attending the CSU counselor conference next Wednesday. I look forward to bringing back more information on their application process. They notified me yesterday that their application is open! Application cannot be submitted until Oct. 1st but this is another great opportunity to look at the application and get started. Link below:

FAFSA and CADAA...

Will not open until December 1st. I will keep everyone updated as I receive more information.

I am aware this is a lot of information! Please reach out to me if you have any questions!
